Reverse Wrinkles and Furrows Around the Mouth

Marionette lines, smoker’s lines and strawberry chin: As you get older, life experiences show up in the form of lines and wrinkles on the face – in addition to the forehead, especially in the mouth area. Here we are discussing ways to reverse the wrinkles and the  treatments that  help against furrows around your mouth and why you should avoid sleeping on your side.

As you get older, your facial features become more prominent. Wrinkles and sometimes furrows increasingly form. This aging process of the skin cannot be completely stopped. But there are ways to counteract this. What these are.

Which mouth wrinkles form when?

The mark wrinkles arise when the lower jaw recedes over the years and the elasticity of the skin decreases. The facial skin becomes slacker and gravity causes it to sag. As the name suggests, smoker’s wrinkles can be promoted by smoking – like other wrinkles – because the harmful substances contained in tobacco smoke promote skin aging. But smoker’s wrinkles, like other facial wrinkles, are primarily expression lines. The mouth area in particular is particularly demanding. Speaking, talking, eating, pressing your lips together, for example when concentrating, being angry or sad. All of this leaves marks on the skin over the years. The strawberry chin is also the result of years of facial expressions. In addition, fat and elastic connective tissue fibers on the chin break down as we get older.

What are the so-called side sleeper wrinkles?

It is actually the case that side and stomach sleepers are more likely to develop wrinkles on the side of their face where they prefer to sleep. We also talk about impression wrinkles. Young skin can compensate for this well. From the age of 35, the skin only regenerates slowly. If the weight of your head is on one side of your face for several hours every night, this is often reflected in flatter cheeks, drooping eyelids and drooping corners of the mouth. Sleeping on your side also promotes cleavage wrinkles. If you want to reduce the formation of wrinkles, it is recommended to sleep on your back.

What aesthetic medical treatments for mouth wrinkles are there?

For prevention and for existing fine lines around the mouth, Botox (botulinum toxin, BTX) is the treatment of choice. Botox works against drooping corners of the mouth as well as upper lip wrinkles. Botox is a toxin that relaxes the skin around the mouth, smoothing wrinkles. If the wrinkles are already more pronounced, a combination therapy of Botox and hyaluronic acid is usually used. While Botox relaxes the muscles, hyaluronic acid plumps the wrinkles around the mouth.

How many treatments are necessary and how long do the results last?

The number of sessions depends on the skin condition. For less deep wrinkles, one session is often enough. If the mouth wrinkles are more pronounced, two to three sessions may be necessary. Botox treatment usually needs to be repeated several times a year. Hyaluronic acid is injected about once or twice a year. For very pronounced lines, laser therapy can complement treatment with Botox and hyaluronic acid.

What happens to the skin during laser treatment on the mouth?

Laser treatment is particularly suitable for lighter skin types. It has an ablative effect, i.e. removing material. Depending on the laser used, the top layer of skin is injured or burned, thereby stimulating collagen formation and skin renewal. Fresh, firm skin can appear under the treated skin. However, it should be noted that the healing time can be several weeks depending on the laser used. The treatment is also not painless. However, the skin can be pretreated in such a way that the pain is less. Micro-needling can be an alternative. With micro-needling, tiny needles are inserted into the skin, the tips of which are heated using a pulse switch. The resulting heat stimulates the tissue under the skin to regenerate.

What can you do yourself against wrinkles on your mouth?

Once wrinkles appear, they can only be smoothed out with appropriate treatment. Creams can moisturize the skin and plump it up a bit, but they cannot remove wrinkles. The most important thing is to prevent wrinkles from forming. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh foods. This means the skin is supplied with important nutrients. Avoid smoking. Smoking is toxic to the skin and accelerates skin aging. You should only drink alcohol in moderation and only consume sugar in moderation – both also promote skin aging. And you should never go without good sun protection.
