Trump Threatens to Close Border With Mexico

US president Donald Trump has threatened to close the border with neighboring Mexico if the Mexican Government fails to stop the influx of Mexicans leaving the South American country.

It is feared that the closure of the border may result in unprecedented consequences both in terms of travel and trade.

Trump’s announcement came at a time when thousands of Mexicans are trying to leave Mexico for the US in search of a better life.

Mexico’s Reaction

Reacting to the announcement, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he doesn’t want to be pushed into conflicts.

Separately in a tweet, Mexico’s foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard remind Trump that Mexico is a great neighbor and that the country will not take any action on the basis of such threats.

He further stated that it’s not only a Mexican problem rather a South American one.

The president said a good number of people migrating to US through US-Mexico border are from other South American countries, and that Mexican’s no more leave the country in search of jobs.

What did Trump exactly say?

Speaking to a group of journalists on Friday, Trump said that there is a high possibility that he would close the border next week. He stated that it is absolutely in the power of the Mexican government to stop the immigrants but they deliberately chose not to do that.

The president then, as usual took the fight to Twitter.
