Blood pressure tablets: Taking antihypertensive drugs in the evening reduces the risk of secondary illnesses.
Whether you take your blood pressure tablets in the morning or evening has an impact on your health. Experts recommend a certain time of day.
A study has shown that those who take antihypertensive drugs later reduce their risk of secondary illnesses. The blood pressure values achieved are then better on average, the researchers report in the “European Heart Journal”. As a result, the risk of a serious secondary illness fell by almost half.
Daily medication for high blood pressure
People with high blood pressure usually have to take medication every day. These keep the values lower throughout the day and also at night. As part of the “Hygia” research project, a Spanish research team led by Ramón Hermida from the University of Vigo investigated when antihypertensive drugs should best be taken at over 40 medical centers in Spain .
Study with 19,000 participants achieves important results
Of the more than 19,000 study participants with high blood pressure, half took the medication in the evening and the other half when they woke up. For six years, doctors checked the test subjects’ blood pressure at least once a year – using blood pressure monitors that the patients kept on their bodies for over 48 hours. It turned out that the group that took their medication in the evening achieved better results. In addition, the risk of serious secondary illnesses was reduced. These include deaths due to cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes or procedures due to blocked blood vessels.
