Pieces of a Woman: Award Winning Film on Netflix This Week

Pieces of a Woman, one of the most awarded and acclaimed films of 2020, will be on Netflix on January 7, 2021. The drama is directed by Kornél Mundruczó and is produced by one of the main characters of Hollywood, Martin Scorsese.

It was officially presented at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival, where actress Vanessa Kirby won the award for best leading actress.

The film was also nominated for the Golden Lion for Best Film and won the Arca CinemaGiovani Award for Best Film. The reason is a mix of factors including the story and the cast. The plot is very intense and deals with profound themes, such as grief, loss, and relationships.

The cast also features Shia LaBeouf in the role of co-star Sean Carson. The plot develops around the birth of a woman, the protagonist Martha.

Martha decides to give birth at home but the midwife is not available, so a replacement arrives, but something goes wrong and the happy event turns into deep mourning. The story is taken from a real story and leaves the viewer breathless scene after scene.

Pieces of a Woman: The Plot Based on a True Story

Pieces of a Woman tells the story of Martha and Sean, a couple expecting a baby girl. The expecting woman decides to give birth at home. Something goes wrong and, despite the help of her husband and midwife, the baby dies moments after birth. This fact leads the couple to face the darkest moment imaginable.

The film is based on the true story of the director and his wife Kata Weber, who is also the screenwriter of the film. Perhaps it is this link between reality and fiction that makes the film absolutely thrilling, realistic, and devoid of excessively dramatic and surreal tones. This avoids the spectacle of pain while making room for a powerful narrative, supported by a few words but many shots that are able to communicate every emotion arising from the plot.

Pieces of a Woman is the third that Weber and Mundruczó have worked on together, after White God and A Moon Called Europe.
