5 Amazing Outbreak Movies to Watch During the Coronavirus Lock Down

The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly triggered production companies’ interest in themes like pandemic, outbreak, epidemic, etc. While new productions may be already on the way, we are interested to look into the films you might already have ignored but the ongoing pandemic has given them a second life.

1. Contagion (2011)


The most notable of these films is the 2011 Hollywood film Contagion, whose script is strikingly similar to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The production, which ranked 270th in Warner Bros’ catalog before the Coronavirus outbreak is now on the 2nd. The movie also climbed to the top of the Amazon Prime charts, while Apple has placed the film among its’s 10 iTunes rankings.

The 2011 film is about a virus epidemic that has caused a worldwide lockdown. People are advised to wear masks outdoors and companies are struggling to discover a vaccine to counter the outbreak. The pandemic caused by a virus that has passed from pig to humans after a bat bite in Hong Kong is of course the first in terms of its similarity to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Scott Burns, the film’s screenwriter, says he met with many scientists before writing the plot, and most of them said there would be this kind of epidemic soon. Burns says, “I’m not that surprised.”

2. Outbreak (1995)


The 1995 film is about an epidemic caused by an Ebola-like virus. Starring stars such as Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman and Rene Russo have given their top-notch performance in the film. the production ranked third among the top 10 movies on Netflix.

3. 28 days later (2002)


Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the  2002 films revolves around four people (Murphy, Harris, Burns, and Gleeson) struggling to survive in great Britain hit by a deadly virus. The movie depicts the plot where an accidental release of a highly contagious virus has perplexed life in the UK.

A group of animal activists release some virus-infected chimpanzees in Cambridge that unleashes a pandemic across the country. The virus induces rage in the host and causes societal collapse.

4. 12 Monkeys (1995)


A deadly virus has ravaged the entire globe forcing survivors to go underground. A group known as the army of 12 is blamed to be behind the release of the fatal virus.

The 1995 film follows James code in 2035, a prisoner in Philadelphia, trained and sent back in time to Baltimore in 1996 to find the original virus in order to help scientists find a cure. James reaches pops up in Baltimore in 1990 instead of 1996 and gets arrested. He is then hospitalized for mental breakdown issues and interviews by a panel for experts.

Code struggles to explain to the panel that the outbreak has already happened and nobody can avert it.

5. Carriers (2009)


Written and directed by Alex and David pastor, this 2009 American post-apocalyptic tells the story of three people, Brian, his brother Danny and Brian’s girlfriend Bobby. In a world where a highly infectious virus has killed half of the world’s population, the trio heads to the Turtle Beach in the Southwestern United States where they will remain safe until the outbreak dies out.

On their way to the beach, the group encounters stranded on the road due to a broken vehicle with his wife and infected daughter. The group has to follow a set of rules devised by Brian to survive the pandemic.
