Altai Sea Buckthorn Uses, Nutrients, Hair & Skin Health Benefits

Sea buckthorn is a shrub that occurs mainly in Asia. In Russian, the sea buckthorn is called oblepikha. The second part of the name of this valuable resource comes from the Altai – a mountain range located in Central Asia and extending to the territory of Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.

Due to the distinctive appearance, small orange fruits, this plant is grown primarily for decorative purposes. Thanks to the ability to adapt, the shrub has developed the ability to survive in difficult weather conditions.

The frosty climate of Siberia favors the fruit, which after the frosts take on exceptional sweetness. The name of the Altai sea buckthorn from the Greek means “shining horse”. There is an interesting legend behind it.

When the world was not yet motorized, horses were the main source of transportation. The journeys were therefore long and exhausting for man. Horses, on the other hand, fed on sea-buckthorn berries, and thus not only were in perfect physical condition but also had a thick and shiny coat.

Altai Sea Buckthorn Nutrients

Altai sea buckthorn is a fruit of great strength. Even Tibetan monks derive from its pro-health properties. Above all, it is a powerful antioxidant weapon that is effective in the fight against free radicals that cause damage at the cellular level.

Spring-blooming sea buckthorn in Siberia contains about 190 bioactive substances, including:

  1. 14 vitamins – C, A, E, F, K, P, B12, and more.
  2. 11 micronutrients – including iron, silicon, calcium, potassium, and aluminum and others.
  3. 18 amino acids.
  4. 22 fatty acids.
  5. 42 lipids.

Interestingly, sea buckthorn fruits contain more vitamin C than oranges. And that’s 15 times! Three times more than in black currants and more than in rose hips. This means that eating 100 grams of “Siberian gold” provides the body with more vitamin C than the daily requirement, with a considerable excess.

Buckthorn Hair and Skin Benefits

Plants growing in Siberia are characterized by a short growing season. So the process of obtaining fruit requires proper preparation. In addition, the fruit should be picked at the right time to obtain a maximum of the bioactive constituents.

1. Contains Powerful Anti-aging Properties

Carotenoids, which give the fruit a beautiful color, not only improve the skin tone but also have strong regenerative and anti-wrinkle properties. Importantly, they act as a natural UVB filter, which protects the epidermis against damage and premature aging.

2. Heals Wounds, Cardiovascular Health

They also accelerate the healing of wounds and burns. Thanks to the presence of vitamin E, also known as the “vitamin of youth”, as well as minerals and flavonoids, cosmetics with Altai sea buckthorn fruit in the composition support the condition of blood vessels.

3. Buckthorn Fights Acne and Pimples

Altai sea buckthorn oil is recommended for people with acne problems. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties soothe dermatological changes, and vitamin C accelerates the repair processes of the epidermis.

4. Anti-irritation, Skin Regeneration

The berry extracts of this plant can be successfully used by people with dry and irritated skin. Omega-7 acids, which are a component of the skin’s hydro-lipid barrier, effectively regenerate the skin and help maintain an adequate level of hydration. Natural cosmetics based on the Altai sea buckthorn are recommended even for atopic skins.

5. Improves Scalp Health, Hair Nourishment

Hair will also benefit from sea buckthorn properties. Valuable ingredients not only protect the scalp but also enter the hair structure and nourish it from the inside out. What’s more, extracts of this fruit show anti-dandruff properties.
